Robot field-trip time

One of Cambridge Consultants’ robots recently swapped the safety of the lab for something far less predictable…the real world.

Meet Jackie.

Taken to the Cambridge Science Centre, Jackie’s outing was part experiment, part adventure. The goal: push beyond controlled conditions and see what really happens when cutting-edge robotics meets unfamiliar territory. Unsurprisingly, it got messy.

There were tangled moments (including some impressively complex “inverse kinematic knots”), unexpected uses of tele-operation, and, inevitably, a modest trail of destruction left behind.

But that’s where the value lies, because outside the lab, things don’t behave perfectly. Systems are tested, assumptions are challenged, and new insights emerge, often in ways you don’t see coming.

For the team, the trip delivered exactly that: a fresh perspective on how their technology performs when it matters most. And for Jackie? Just another day out pushing the boundaries of what robots can do.
