Park member PeroCycle is developing technology which could help cut emissions from one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries after announcing new partnerships to accelerate its journey towards commercial deployment.
Based at The Bradfield Centre, the company has developed a process that captures carbon dioxide from industrial manufacturing and converts it back into carbon monoxide, allowing it to be reused in the manufacturing process and reducing the need for fossil fuels such as coal and coke.
According to the company, the technology could reduce carbon emissions from steelmaking by up to 90 per cent while also cutting energy use and lowering costs. Because it can be integrated into new facilities or retrofitted into existing plants, manufacturers could reduce their carbon footprint without the expense of replacing existing infrastructure.
To help bring the technology to market, PeroCycle has signed agreements with industrial gas specialist Beijing Peking University Pioneer Technology Corporation (PKU Pioneer) and engineering consultancy io consulting. The partnerships will support the engineering and design work needed to move the technology from successful laboratory testing towards large-scale demonstration and, ultimately, commercial deployment.
If successful, the innovation could offer heavy industries a practical way to cut emissions while improving efficiency, helping one of the world’s biggest polluting sectors move closer to net zero.
