Cambridge is urged to dig deep for Children in Need!

Your support for the Cambridge FunRun in aid of BBC Children in Need is urgently needed now! With many local companies weathering the recession well and recruiting vigorously, you might expect that next Friday’s 1.1 mile relay race on Cambridge Science Park would have attracted generous contributions…

That does not appear to be the case. So far there are just 21 teams signed up on the donation platform provided by Roundpoint, aiming to raise a target figure of around £8,000 (see the table below). 

An added incentive has just been announced from new sponsors Nokia – there are four Nokia N8s up for grabs for the team that raises the most sponsorship money, so sign up your team and start collecting now! 

Every penny raised goes to disadvantaged children, many of whom are in this region – see the document below to read about some of the projects that have benefited.

BBC Children in Need has supported the following projects:

• the provision of clowns going into hospitals in Cambridgeshire to help children’s stay in hospital more comfortable

• the provision of a summer playscheme for up to 101 children aged 4-18yrs with profound to moderate learning disabilities in Cambridgeshire.

• Counselling services for 80 children and young people who are experiencing psychological and behavioural problems.

• A project that provides stimulating and safe play activities to disadvantaged children aged 0-5 years.

• Support to disadvantaged children via community action work in Cambridge, provided by students running projects such as befriending, teaching English, sports, and arts.

• Counselling and mental health support for young carers as well as information and outreach on issues such as sexual health, homelessness and risky behaviours such as alcohol and drug misuse.

• One and peer group support to bereaved children.

• The provision of a staffed play area for children visiting family members in prison.
