The Cambridge BioResource supports studies looking at how genes influence a variety of diseases and illnesses. By gaining more understanding of the specific genes involved in the development of a disease, researchers can begin to identify better treatments to reduce the effect of the disease or cure it.
Volunteers who join Cambridge BioResource donate their DNA via a blood or saliva sample which is used together with other information, such as gender and ethnicity, to match them to specific research studies. Volunteers are free to choose which studies they would like to take part in, allowing the CBR to provide researchers with groups of participants, tailor-made to the research study.
Over the past 10 years, the Cambridge BioResource volunteers have supported around 80 research studies. Each study can ask for a different level of involvement, from answering a health questionnaire to providing a blood sample, collecting height and weight measurements or having an MRI scan.
