From PhD to Startup: Cambridge with Pahini Pandya and Ross Harper

Have a PhD or Masters in a technical subject and want to make an impact, but don't know where to start? Ambitions of starting something one day, but unsure when to take the plunge? How can you leverage your unique insights and skills to build the most ambitious thing possible?
These may be questions you ask yourself, and they are certainly questions Ross and Pahini asked before they went from academia to founding a company.

Ross Harper is the founder and CEO of Limbic AI, a platform that enables developers to quantify how their users really feel at that moment, by applying machine learning to biometric data collected by wearable devices. His company’s technology has only been made possible by recent advances in AI and wearable sensors. Before starting Limbic, Ross completed a PhD in Computational Neuroscience at UCL and a Masters in Neuroscience at Cambridge. Since raising seed-funding last year, Limbic’s team of scientists and developers are working hard to ensure apps can become ’emotionally intelligent’ for the first time.

Pahini Pandya is the founder and CEO of Panakeia, a company developing technologies to make cancer-related deaths a history through single-step diagnosis and precision treatment. She is a World Economic Forum Global Shaper, and Life Scientist specialised in the mechanisms of drug resistance in metastasising cancer cells. Before joining EF’s most recent cohort, she completed a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biophysics at King’s College London and studied at Cambridge Judge Business School.

Our speakers will share their story and the key points in their career that brought them here. They’ll cover questions like how do you settle on an idea, what do investors care about, and most importantly, how do you find a co-founder that propels you? Finally, they’ll share advice on transitioning from academia to running a startup.
