SUMMARY:Cambridge Online Pop-up
DESCRIPTION:Cambridge Online is a local charity\, dedicated to enabling digital inclusion. It is estimated that 1 in 4 individuals suffer some form of online exclusion\, and over 30% of schoolchildren currently sit below the minimum digital living standard. We help over 2\,000 people a year (all demographics)\, improving their lives by practical support and timely interventions. Also\, with the support of our partner Sustainable Tech 4 Good\, we refurbished and gifted over £28\,000 of digital devices in 2025.We want to raise awareness of this chronic issue and encourage firms to get involved and help in whatever way they can. How you as a business help\, the benefits of attending\, and who would attend: We focus on 3 key areas: \n\n\n\n\nProviding equipment to those who lack a digital device\n\n\n\nSkills training on how to use a phone / laptop\n\n\n\nConfidence for those who are afraid of engaging (scams\, phishing etc.)\n\n\n\n\nAttendees will receive powerful insights into the work done by the charity\, and how their organisations can help\, including: \n\n\n\n\nVolunteering is an essential part of our operations\, either helping host our sessions or assisting us for with our IT\, marketing and events\, fund-raising\, or data analysis (we have a list of suitable opportunities).\n\n\n\nDemand for equipment far exceeds supply\, so any donations would be fantastic and this is often the quickest way to improve a person’s outcome.

SUMMARY:Architecture Kata
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, for our March meetup\, we’re hosting an Architecture Kata. Join us for this session and get the chance to flex your software architectural design muscles! \n\n\n\nWhat’s the format? You’ll be split into groups and have a business problem to solve. You’ll be tasked with designing a technical architecture to meet that problem context. \n\n\n\nAs with real-life you’ll have to manage various trade-offs in your design and interact with a Product Owner to clarify your questions. \n\n\n\nAt the end of the task you will showcase your architecture and technology choices back to the wider group as part of a group discussion and you’ll be able to decide if you’d make any decisions differently after receiving feedback and seeing what other groups designed. \n\n\n\nThis session is all about collaborative learning\, skill enhancement and networking in a relaxed environment. You don’t need to be experienced in designing software architecture or a software architect to participate. \n\n\n\nThis is an excellent opportunity to try out Software Architecture in a collaborative\, supportive and fun environment. \n\n\n\nFood and DrinksPizza and drinks will be provided upon arrival\, with vegetarian\, gluten free and vegan options available. \n\n\n\nWant to bring a friend? Great! Just ask them to RSVP so we know they are coming. \n\n\n\nNo need to bring your laptop this time\, we will provide pens\, paper and post-its for each group. \n\n\n\nSponsorsThis meetup would not be possible without the support of The Bradfield Centre who provide their amazing space and Codurance\, the global software engineering consultancy and founders of the Software Crafters communities.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Code: Designing Services That Stand The Test of Time
DESCRIPTION:We have a very special meetup for our April edition! \nWe are delighted to welcome Paul Grenyer\, Senior Team Lead from Haven to discuss: \nBeyond the Code: Designing Services That Stand the Test of Time \nAs software engineers\, it’s easy to get lost in the excitement of implementing clever business logic: the algorithms\, the workflows\, the elegant domain models. But the success (or failure) of a service rarely hinges on its core logic alone. What really separates a fragile prototype from a resilient\, scalable system is everything that happens around that logic: the invisible scaffolding that shapes how a service behaves\, communicates\, and recovers when things go wrong. \nIn this session I’ll explore the often-overlooked aspects of building robust services. The decisions that make the difference between smooth operations and painful refactors months down the line. I’ll unpack how thoughtful design choices early on can pay dividends in maintainability\, observability\, and security later. Whether you’re building your first microservice or managing an ecosystem of services\, you’ll leave with practical ideas for designing services. \nKey Takeaways: \n\nWhy the non-domain aspects of a service are often what determine its long-term success\nHow to think holistically about design\, structure\, and reliability\nStrategies for evolving your services without introducing chaos\n\nAbout Paul: \nHusband\, father\, software engineer\, metaller\, I have been writing software for over 40 years and professionally for more than 25. In that time I have worked for\, and in\, all sorts of companies from two man startups to world famous investment banks and insurance companies. I have built and run three limited companies\, none of which made me a millionaire and two of which threatened my sanity on more than one occasion. \nI was a founding member of both SyncNorwich and Norfolk Developers\, two of the most successful tech and startup community groups in the East of England. I created and chaired the hugely successful Norfolk Developers Conference (nor(DEV):con) for seven years bringing in speakers and delegates in the sphere of software engineering from around the globe. \nI am currently a Software Engineering Team Lead at Bourne Leisure\, the owners of Haven holiday parks. I loathe the word Entrepreneur\, not least because I struggle to spell it and it reminds me of Del Boy from the 80s sitcom Only Fools and Horses. I see Entrepreneurship as a side effect of the creative process of problem solving\, rather than a career path in its own right. \nDespite having dealt with the world of business from directors of the board down\, I have kept both feet firmly on the ground\, even when my head has been in the clouds\, with healthy doses of Heavy Metal\, Science Fiction and Formula One and long hair until it started falling out in 2013. \nNow I can add author to the mix\, having written my first book\, So You Think You Can Lead a Team?\, based on 25 years of lessons\, mistakes\, and unexpected leadership journeys. \nOh\, and I love good tea too!\n——— \nThis is a great opportunity to learn\, share and discuss some of the most important topics related to software engineering we are facing\, so come along with your thoughts\, concerns\, questions and ideas to make this talk as interactive as possible. \nAll levels welcome – no need to bring your laptop as this is a non hands-on session. \nFood and Drinks\nPizza and drinks will be provided upon arrival sponsored by Codurance\, with vegetarian and vegan options available. \nVenue Host\nOur venue host is The Bradfield Centre\, managed by Mantle Space. A huge thank you as always to the team for sponsoring the space. \nWant to bring a friend? Great! Just ask them to RSVP so we know they are coming. \nWe want to hear from YOU!\nThe community is for you so please complete this short anonymous form to tell us what you want to get out of the group so we can curate events that meet your interests and preferences.

We’ll chat over food and drink\, listen to an inspirational speaker or two\, chat some more\, and go home buzzing with new contacts and new ideas. \nLet’s have a lovely night in the company of some amazin’ people. \nSpeaker: Joe Glover\, Co-Founder of The Marketing Meetup \nThe format of the night: \n6.00 PM – Doors Open – Drinks\, Networking\, and smiles6.45 PM – Introduction and Talks Begin7.15 PM – Talks Finish\, Networking\, Listening\, Saying Hello\, and Positively Lovely People – A nice chilled out time 7.45 PM – End of the night – you leave with new contacts and fresh ideas \nAnd finally… \nThis is a donation ticketed event. The ticket price is yours to choose\, from £5 to £50 (the average attendees choose to spend £11.38 \nWe of course understand that these are tough times\, so if you are experiencing financial hardship and cannot afford the minimum donation amount\, please reach out to el@themarketingmeetup.com and we’ll find a ticket for you (provided capacity hasn’t already been reached!) \nPlease let your marketing friends and colleagues know about this group too\, I hope to build it into a great resource for the community over the coming months and years. Attendance will be taken at this event. If you sign up but don’t show up\, this has a knock on effect on event arrangements. If it happens 3 times\, you’re outta here! This is simply a measure to allow appropriate respect to the organisers\, speakers\, sponsors\, and your fellow community members \n\n\n
