The phrase ‘IT meets Telecom’ is well illustrated by the vision of cloud-native deployments for 5G, which position future mobile, fixed core and access networks as an enterprise service architecture with regional data centres interconnected through a software-defined wide area network. Key to this paradigm shift is the move away from the traditional way of designing networks (through peer relations between network functions) to applying well-established web service-based methods utilized by big Internet players such as Google, Facebook and others. This shift brings together concepts such as service-based architecture with a lifecycle management through emerging virtualization and orchestration frameworks. Industry activities in this space focus on key SDOs, such as the 3GPP, but also concrete demos and 5G trials that showcase the capabilities of those new network designs. This workshop will cover concrete deployment insights by key players in this field with references to those ongoing industry activities
