Cambridge Heartwear founder Professor Rameen Shakur has been appointed to the Government’s Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE).
The independent scientific committee provides statutory advice to Government on the potential risks to human health and the environment from genetically modified organisms. It also has a role in the regulation of precision-bred organisms, providing scientific advice and recommendations to the Secretary of State.
Professor Shakur, Professor of Genomics and Precision Cardiovascular Medicine, began his three-year term on 7 September.
He is a founder of Park member Cambridge Heartwear, which is developing technology to improve the detection and diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions.
The appointment follows a competitive public appointments process, with ACRE bringing together scientific expertise from a range of disciplines to inform government decision-making.
Professor Shakur’s term runs until September 2029.
