2023 Highlights

Cambridge Science Park 2023 Highlights

The Cambridge Science Park is where science companies thrive and 2023 has been a busy year for the Park and the companies that are situated on it. As the year comes to an end, we are taking a moment to reflect on the highlights of 2023.

Let’s have a look at what’s happened this year on Cambridge Science Park:

Trinity Bradfield Prize

On January 24th the winners of the 2022 Trinity Bradfield Prize were announced. First prize went to Daniel Buhl, PhD researcher at Cambridge Vet School, whose initiative has created a diagnostic test for a common condition in cows. The test will ultimately help reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance and the emergence of vectors of infection between animals and humans.

The winner for this year will be announced on Wednesday 24th January 2024.Tickets for the final are available here

NHS Health Check MOT

In February the NHS carried out free health checks for Park members aged between 40-74. The checks included blood sugar level test (HbA1c diabetes test), cholesterol test (TOTAL, HDL and Ratio), blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, lifestyle screening to prevent heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and dementia).

The NHS Health Checks will return in the new year – stay tuned!

Cookie Workshop

This year for Mother’s Day, we decided to get the Park members involved in something creative and different as we hosted a free cookie workshop, which was extremely popular and sold out.

There will be more creative events like this next year so make sure you check ParkLife for updates.

Cambridge Tech Week 2023

Cambridge Science Park took part in the inaugural Cambridge Tech Week, celebrating the city’s tech cluster. Park residents Roku gave a tour of their impressive set-up and Park Director, Jane Hutchins gave a talk on Cambridge Science Park as part of the International Day, which wrapped up a very successful and engaging week..

We will be taking part in next year’s Cambridge Tech Week – keep an eye out for more information on how to get involved.

Cambridge Independent Science and Technology Awards

Cambridge Science Park sponsored the STEM Initiative of the Year award and Jane was on the panel of judges. The Award was won by the fantastic Cambourne Electronics and Robotics Club (CERC).

A number of companies on the Park were shortlisted for the award including;

Merck Curiosity Cube

Merck’s Curiosity Cube landed in the Park in May to captivate local school children and attract tomorrow's scientists.

The three-day visit to the Park was part of a global tour of more than 200 events across Europe and North America which are expected to inspire nearly 50,000 young learners.

Decarbonisation Review

Cambridge Science Park and Trinity College asked Savills Earth to conduct a decarbonisation review on the Park. The review focuses on the decarbonisation of the buildings on the Park, with the goal of achieving asset level net zero emissions by 2050.

Trinity’s vision for the Cambridge Science Park is to collaborate with the Park stakeholders to create a sustainable community where innovation can thrive, by promoting decarbonisation, positive actions, and inspiring others.

We will be sharing this review with you in the New Year – stay tuned.

Cambridge Wide Open Day

Cambridge Science Park was honoured to take part in the first Cambridge Wide Open Day as an official venue. This enabled members of the public to gain insights into the world of science and technology in Cambridge.

Members of the Park such as Astex Pharmaceuticals, TusPark and Cambridge Future Tech took part in this event, showcasing their work to the public of Cambridge. We are pleased to announce that we are an official venue for next year’s CWOD.

If you are a company on the Park and would like to take part in the next CWOD, please email: helloteam@cambridgesciencepark.co.uk

Business Weekly Awards

Cambridge Science Park sponsored the Sustainability Champion award at the Business Weekly Awards 2023. Jane was on the panel of judges and was hugely impressed by the calibre of entries. The award was won by Advanced Infrastructure who developed a Local Area Energy Planning Tool.

A number of companies on the Park were shortlisted for the awards:

  • Astex Pharmaceuticals
  • Biofedelity
  • CN Bio
  • Futurespace
  • FlexEnable
  • Macomics

Park Director visits Science Parks in China

In August, Jane was invited to present at the HICOOL Summit in Beijing, one of the most influential innovation and entrepreneurship networks in China. While in the country, Jane also toured a number of science and innovation parks operated by TusPark (operators of Cambridge’s Bio-innovation Centre), and met with their leadership teams and local administration officials.

Movie Night

In September, we brought the fabulous Moving Cinema – a lorry that converts to a proper cinema - to host a film screening outside the Bradfield Centre. In a poll of Park members that included the likes of Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny, Oppenheimer and Top Gun Maverick, the Barbie movie won most votes and was duly shown. Popcorn and fizzy drinks were, naturally, included.

Innovate Cambridge Summit 2023

Jane spoke on a panel at the the Innovate Cambridge Summit in October where a proposed innovation strategy was discussed addressing how to maximise the impact of the ecosystem. Throughout the year, Cambridge Science Park played a key role, contributing to discussions and workshops that helped formulate the final strategic recommendations.

Mulberry Tree Plant

In November, Jane, Richard Turnill, the Senior Bursar of Trinity College and Danny Fuller, Park Estate Manager who has been working at the Cambridge Science Park for over 38 years, planted a mulberry tree outside the Bradfield Centre in memory of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The mulberry tree was chosen by members of the Park community and we all look forward to watching it grow and flourish over future years.

Cambridge Science Centre

Cambridge Science Park sponsored Cambridge Science Centre to deliver a pilot outreach programme at Arbury Primary School. CSC have structured a three-session programme that will run throughout the academic year involving two Year 5 classes.

Their chosen theme for the programme is Living on the Moon; children will explore space-related topics, engage in team-building activities, and initiate discussions about the essentials for living on the moon.

Cambridge Science Park Christmas Market

This year’s Christmas Market was a great success, with a footfall of over 500 people, more than 40 stallholders and 5 foodPark trucks - plus a craft beer van! Together, we raised £950 for the work of the Cambridge Science Centre and Kickstart Coffee raised a further £300 that will fund a teacher in Uganda for a month.

If you came down, you would’ve seen the Directors office team handing out free mince pies and mulled wine!

That’s just an overview of memorable events that have happened this year. None of these would have been possible without your participation and support. THANK YOU – and stay tuned for more exciting projects in the New Year!
